“A child with a future starts at eating right, eat vegetables and your future is bright.”
In order to encourage the children to like eating vegetables, the 4 vegetable program was conceived. In this program, children plant 4 kinds of vegetables in small pots or plots either at home or in school and learn all about the characteristics, uses, of the plant. After 3-4 months when most of the vegetables are ready for harvest, the museum together with visitors take a tour of the different vegetable gardens to see their produce. The children who planted the vegetables take turns touring the guests around the garden and explaining all about the nutritional values, medicinal values and scientific and local names of the vegetables. By this time, the child who planted the vegetable is also excited to taste and eat it.
After harvest, the local government of Sagay donates the rice, while the parents of the kids bring some of the ingredients to mix with the vegetables, like small shrimps, bits of pork , beef or chicken. The whole class join in the preparation of the cooking, the parents cook the vegetables, the teachers cook the rice and everybody gets to share in a very nutritious lunch. This is an on-going program in most of the schools in Sagay and starts every June and ends in Feb. or March.
